Designer Karine Tawil’s goal for spring is to “de-dramatize” eveningwear. By reinterpreting a formal silhouette with comfortable fabrics, she’s creating dressed-down gowns that can be paired with 6-inch heels or sneakers. Cutout details and draping add just enough daytime glamour to cotton and jersey.
To cope with six collections a year, Tawil developed formal design codes for the label. She starts with these references, and then lets the textiles direct the final looks. “When I receive a fabric, I start manipulating it on a mannequin or myself. That’s when an idea starts to take shape,” she says.
For Tawil, form follows function. She listens intently to her clients, taking mental note of the parts they want to show off and their self-professed problem areas. “What I like to do is find concrete solutions for the modern woman,” she explains. “I’d like to touch as many women, with as many different body types, as possible.”
